From July 13th to the 30th 2012, I traveled to Cape Verde through the URI faculty-led study abroad program, visiting the islands of Santiago and São Vicente. There, I focused specifically on the history and politics of Cape Verde, as well as the scientific, cultural, economic, environmental, historical, and social importance of the oceans. The main course was AAF 390 Directed Study: Documentary film production of fishing industry and environmental sustainability. With the footage acquired from the trip, I have created a documentary film that portrays the situations within the fishing communities. Properly managing natural resources is crucial for Cape Verdeans. They must get the most use out of what little resources they have without being dependent on anyone else. The biggest resource fo...

The biggest resource for the archipelago of Cape Verde is the Atlantic Ocean. Because of its location, a major source of food as well employment that the islands have is fish. The fishermen of Cape Verde work diligently every day to provide food for their family, their community, as well as the rest of the country. The ocean and the fishing industry are precious aspects of the country that need protection and recognition. There are various issues throughout the nation that are hurting the fisheries. The best way to prevent the decay of the industry is through proper investment from the government and through agreements with other countries. Expansion of the industry depends on this financial investment into the maintenance of the local ships and processing plants. Negotiations with foreign markets and other fisheries will help build a better and more sustainable fishing economy. One of the subjects of the film focuses on meeting the fishermen organization of the Artisanal Fisheries as well as ones in the community of São Tome. This is an important aspect to the film because it captures the efforts of the fishermen as they discuss their work ethic, problems, and solutions they look forward to achieving. We also spent multiple days filming the fish market and touristic fisheries in São Vicente. There, we gathered numerous interviews with the men and women selling fish as well as fishermen coming in on their boats. There is a major focus on this section of the documentary, because it depicts the working environment of the daily procedures for a variety of people in the industry. I plan on continuing to create documentaries on subjects that promote positive social change. My documentary on the fisheries in Cape Verde sheds light on the overlooked struggles and hard work that the country is dealing with.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. The African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde was founded in 1956, and guerrilla warfare grew increasingly effective. By 1974 the rebels controlled most of the countryside, where they formed a government that was soon recognized by scores of countries. The military coup in Portugal in April 1974 brightened the prospects for freedom, and in August the Lisbon government signed an agreement granting independence to the province. 2. Although Portuguese is the official language, used in mass media, official documents and schools, it’s Creole that’s the lingua franca in Guinea Bissau. The language is known by most Bissau Guineans and it’s a local version or dialect of Portuguese (combined with native languages). 3. Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability since independence, and no elected president has successfully served a full five-year term. Since independence in 1974, every single acting president was either assassinated or deposed by a military coup. This instability contributed to the country’s status as one of the poorest nations on Earth. 4. The land now known as Guinea-Bissau was once the kingdom of Gabú, which was part of the larger Mali Empire. After 1546 Gabú became more autonomous, and at least portions of the kingdom existed until 1867. In the 19th century, it was colonized as Portuguese Guinea. 5. Bissau is an impressive rural metropolis where many of the upscale villas are built according to Mediterranean architecture. The city's name was added to the county name when independence was achieved to avoid confusion with neighboring Guinea. 6. Throughout the 20th century, most Bissau-Guineans practiced some form of Animism. In the early 21st century, many have adopted Islam, which is now practiced by 45% of the country's population. Approximately 19% of the country's population belongs to the Christian community, and 31% continue to hold Indigenous beliefs. 7. The Ghanaians' struggle for freedom in the 1950s inspired the people of Guinea-Bissau to put up their own fight, which succeeded in 1974. Both flags use the popular pan-African colors of Ethiopia. More information about the video content bellow: 1. Cabo Verde is a marine extension of the Sahara. A series of hot winds carrying brown dust from the Sahara appear in blasts that sweep across the islands during October to June and are known as harmattan. 2. Benito Mussolini the Italian dictator bought the rights to build an airport on Sal, Cabo Verde as he needed to refuel his aircraft on the flights between Europe and South America. Portugal bought the airport back off him in 1945. Christopher Columbus visited the island of Boa Vista of Cabo Verde in 1498. Charles Darwin studied flora and fauna on the island in 1832. Vasco da Gama visited Santiago, Cabo Verde in 1497. It was on that same voyage he later discovered India. 3. When the archipelago became independent on July 5th 1975, the independence of Cape Verde was shared with Guinea Bissau. They were a joint country until 1980. Immediately following the November 1980 coup in Guinea-Bissau, relations between Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau became strained. Cape Verde abandoned its hope for unity with Guinea-Bissau and formed the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV). 4. In 2005 there were 418,224 inhabitants on the Cape Verde islands. There are more Cape Verdeans living abroad than at home. There are over 350,000 in the USA alone. Cape Verdeans also emigrated to the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, others include Senegal, Angola, Luxemburg, Argentina and Brazil. In the UK there are groups of Cape Verdeans in Liverpool, Cardiff, Newcastle and Hull. 5. There was a concentration camp at Tarrafal which operated between 1936 and 1954 and then in the 1960’s but closing finally in 1974. The prison was closed for the second, and final, time following the Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974 which ended Portugal's 50-year-old Fascist regime. 6. After independence, Praia, the capital city, underwent a demographic boom. After 33 years its population had quadrupled, receiving migrating movements from all the islands. As a result, half of the entire population of Cabo Verde currently resides in Santiago island; a fourth in the Municipality of Praia; and a fifth in the City of Praia alone. 7. Since the early 1990s, Cape Verde has been a stable representative democracy, and remains one of the most developed and democratic countries in Africa. After spending nine months in mainland Africa, Logos Hope and her crew sailed to the colourful island nation of Cape Verde. The ship stopped in two ports: first Praia, then Mindelo. Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, and the 100th unique port Logos Hope has visited since launching into service in 2009. Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva gave a warm welcome on behalf of the country during the official opening in Praia, which was a very good introduction for the two ports.
