From July 13th to the 30th 2012, I traveled to Cape Verde through the URI faculty-led study abroad program, visiting the islands of Santiago and São Vicente. There, I focused specifically on the history and politics of Cape Verde, as well as the scientific, cultural, economic, environmental, historical, and social importance of the oceans. The main course was AAF 390 Directed Study: Documentary film production of fishing industry and environmental sustainability. With the footage acquired from the trip, I have created a documentary film that portrays the situations within the fishing communities. Properly managing natural resources is crucial for Cape Verdeans. They must get the most use out of what little resources they have without being dependent on anyone else. The biggest resource fo...
Cape Verde is a collection of 12 islands off the coast of North-west Africa. Here, foreigners outnumber locals, and 9 percent of the country's GDP comes from expatriates. Cape Verde has few natural resources, little arable land and is prone to drought - just some of the reasons why many residents are desperate to move to greener pastures.
Capital sights Tour from RIU Touareg Hotel, 30 Minutes by mini bus across the desolate Boa Vista to the Capital City Sal Rei, being introduced by local businesses, Cafe's, Shops, Schools and Churches to experience some real Cape Verde Island life, experiencing local customs and traditions and witnessing first hand the local culture before this beautiful country becomes the next 'Costa Brava'! Neuza was born in 1985 in Praia, the capital city of Cape Verde on the island of Santiago. Her mother, who was born in the island of Fogo, had moved in Praia in the 1980s in search of a better life. There she would sing in the city’s bars in exchange for food, tobacco and drink, while Neuza would stay at home in their humble stone house under the care of her older sisters. Neuza was only 6 when the excess of tobacco took her mother away forever. The little girl went to live with her godmother in Fogo. From her mom, Neuza kept the sound of the melodies she had always heard her singing. She soon learnt the traditional songs from the Island of the Volcano from the passengers singing to avoid being too bored or sick during that dangerous crossing. But she was reluctant to embrace a musical ca...

Cape Verde was a stopover for ships travelling between Europe and the rest of the world for centuries. It used to be a Portuguese colony, and today still retains the language and cultural affinities with its former overlord. It’s one of the most well developed countries in Africa and it’s also becoming a top tourism destination. You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. During our trip to Cape Verde we had visited some interesting places in Santiago: Tarrafal in the northwest-small and lovely fishing village; Assomada-one of the biggest market places in Cabo Verde; Serra Malagueta-mountains between Tarrafal and Assomada; Slow death camp-a sad historical place close to Tarrafal; Praia-a capital city; Cidade Velha-first settlement in Cabo Verde; Jardim Botanico-botanical garden
The clear, cool tones of Nancy Vieira’s voice bring a fresh wave of influences to the classic morna style of Cape Verde. Born in Bissau, she grew op in Cape Verde’s capital Praia, before moving to Portugal where her father - a former musician who had once played with Cesária Évora but who had relinquished all to become an activist in the independence struggle – was the Cape Verdean ambassador. While studying at Lisbon University she won a song contest, resulting in her first album in 1996. True to her relaxed style, she took her own time to make a career, only turning professional with her third release, Lus, in 2007. Since then she has toured internationally with her high-quality band and her new album, No Amá, has won her acclaim as Cape Verde’s finest voice today. Nancy Vieira, lead vo...
